It was indeed a fairy tale ending for Uzma when she crossed the Wagah border and touched Indian land. After nearly 16 days of horror and torture in Pakistan, Uzma was finally crying in happiness.
After she reached Sushma Swaraj's office, the media and the entire country witnessed her emotional reunion with her family members. Uzma twice touched the feet of Sushma Swaraj who hugged her tightly and consoled her. Next Uzma embraced her family members. Not a single eye was left dry after watching the scenes unfolding before their eyes.
Later narrating her ordeal at a press conference Uzma revealed the terror and torture she had lived through in Pakistan for 2 weeks. She said Pakistan is a well of death. It’s easy to get in but you cannot come out.
She further added that she had gone to Pakistan on 1st May to meet Tahir Ali whom she had met in Malaysia and fallen in love with. She planned to come back on 12th May but things changed drastically. On 3rd May Tahir Ali made her sign the Nikaahnama at gun point after he fed her sleeping pills and took her to a remote village called Guner. As per Uzma, men with big guns and multiple wives was a common sight in Guner.
Perhaps the biggest message she gave was that there was no freedom for women in Pakistan. And that she was a proud Indian. Uzma profusely thanked the Indian High Commision in Pakistan and the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. She also narrated how Sushma Swaraj used to call her daily and promised that Uzma will not be allowed to go with Tahir again.
Another life saved, another day at work for Sushma Swaraj. Hopefully this would also bring to light the plight of many more Uzma's held in captivity in Pakistan.
