Since 2014, India has strongly denounced (read shot down) about 460 terrorists under NDA regime while in UPA regime this number was 139 in total in the year of 2012 and 2013 put together.
India has been plagued with terrorists and their activities ever since it was partitioned. It was customary to issue a press release with the words kadi ninda (strong denunciation), every time a terrorist activity claimed lives or regions. In 2012, Indian forces neutralized about 72 terrorists, which further dropped to 67 in 2013. In 2017, so far forces have exterminated 92 terrorists which becomes a way bigger number if we extrapolate the figures for the whole year. These were not the run of the mill daily wage stone pelters; most of them were prominent and hence, prized terror operatives.
If the sources in the ministry are to be believed, Army seems to have received a free hand in interception, mapping and eventual encounter with minimum collateral damage. Army and paramilitary forces have the support from the centre and state government to carry out intelligence gathering operations and smoke the holed up radicals out of their havens.
This campaign needs not only to be sustained, but intensified. India’s diplomatic efforts have resulted in US designating Hizbul chief Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist. On the home front, India has managed to choke the terror funding, resulting in fewer incidences of ‘dissent’ in the valley.
These figures point to a raging question, the military is the same -- efficient, focused and stupendously effective -- what has changed since 2014 then? The government?
